Can Varicose Veins Be Treated Completely and Permanently?
Does Treatment for Varicose Veins Make Them Totally Vanish?
If you have varicose veins, you want them to disappear completely, not partially. Can varicose veins be treated completely? Yes, most of them can, if you choose a board certified, minimally invasive vein doctor. Cosmetic vein centers can’t treat large varicose veins in the legs, so don’t waste time or money on superficial treatments for varicosities. Those are only effective for small facial spider veins or capillaries. Varicosities in leg veins often result from valve failure in a deeper vein. Cosmetic specialists can’t treat deep veins.
Book an appointment with our Harvard-trained vein doctors on Long Island for complete resolution of your varicose veins. Our vein specialists use vein mapping tests to locate the source of the problem. We then administer ultrasound-guided procedures that close off the faulty valve and resultant damaged vein. Our vein doctors customize treatment plans and combine methods as needed for flawless results. That might sound complicated, but our procedures take just 15-30 minutes, and they’re performed in our clinic without the need for general anesthesia.
You can be in and out of our office in less time than a lunch break. There is no recovery period from our non-surgical techniques. So, you can resume your typical routine, including moderate exercise, right away. If you want great results, choose vein doctors with the tools and training to produce them.
Are the Results Permanent When You Treat Varicose Veins?
A properly treated varicose vein won’t return. It’s sealed shut so blood can’t enter it. Over time, it’s absorbed by the body and removed from circulation. If you’ve had a varicose vein return, there are three possible reasons. First, is that the specialist didn’t treat the vein completely. They might not have injected enough adhesive to occlude it, or they might not have injected a sufficient sclerosant to seal it. Our vein doctors use ultrasound guidance to observe treatment as we administer it, so we ensure the vein is closed.
Another reason a vein might return is that you had vein stripping surgery. Cutting the vein out of the body increases the likelihood of revascularization. When the vein regrows, it doesn’t have valves, so it’s more likely to become varicose. Our doctors avoid this possibility by using non-surgical treatment for varicose veins. We close veins inside the body, rather than extracting them, so they don’t revascularize.
The third possibility is that your specialist didn’t check for Chronic Venous Insufficiency. If it’s not treated, you can develop new varicose veins from that faulty valve. So, it might not be that your treated varicose vein returned, but that you have a new one in the same vicinity. We prevent this risk by treating both CVI and existing vein damage. These three reasons are among many that make it wiser to choose a vein doctor than a cosmetic specialist.
Does Chronic Venous Insufficiency Affect the Results?
If your varicose vein stems from Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI), you must treat that condition for complete and permanent relief. In addition to producing varicose veins and spider veins, CVI can cause leg pain, swelling, cramping, restlessness, heaviness, aching, and fatigue. Left untreated, it can progress to include slow-healing venous ulcerations, venous stasis dermatitis, and profuse bleeding when the vein is nicked.
A blood clot or deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is also possible from the broken valves involved in CVI. As blood flows in reverse, it collects beneath the valve, increasing the likelihood of coagulation. A DVT in a deep vein can travel to the lung and cause a fatal blockage in a pulmonary artery. This is one of the main reasons to see a vein doctor before trying home remedies. You might get some symptom relief if you wear compression stockings or avoid long periods of sitting or standing. But these measures won’t correct CVI or prevent a pulmonary embolism. Choose a vein specialist with ultrasound training to identify clots and treat CVI, not just visible vein damage.

What Do the Best Treatment Options for Leg Veins Include?
There are several excellent treatment options for leg veins, and the best one depends on your medical history. The minimally invasive ones are administered without general or spinal anesthesia, and you can drive yourself to and from the appointment. They close the vein right away, and it will take a couple of weeks (up to a couple of months for large veins) for the vein to disappear. Our favorite methods for varicose veins include:
- Varithena- sclerotherapy
- ClosureFast- radiofrequency ablation
- VenaSeal- cyanoacrylate glue
- ClariVein- mechanochemical ablation
Is Radiofrequency or Endovenous Laser Treatment Better?
Endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) is also a common method for treating varicose veins. However, laser energy is hotter than sound waves. So, our doctors favor radiofrequency ablation over endovenous laser ablation because it’s more comfortable for our patients.

Is Surgery Permanent for Large or Small Varicose Veins?
You might notice that vein stripping surgery isn’t on the list of our four most recommended vein treatments. That’s because surgery is no longer a first line of treatment for large or small varicose veins. That being said, some patients do need surgery if they have blood clots or if their veins are too twisted or constricted to be navigated by treatment devices. With surgery, there’s a higher risk of veins growing back, so be sure to choose a qualified vein doctor who knows how to reduce that possibility.
