What are the signs and symptoms of vein disease?
Chronic venous insufficiency (vein disease) is a medical condition wherein the collapse of your vein valves makes blood flow backward in your leg veins. In healthy veins, the valves act as one-way doors to ensure effective blood circulation towards the heart, resisting the force of gravity. When your vein valves collapse, blood flows backward due to the force of gravity, eventually accumulating in your leg veins. Continued blood accumulation in the leg veins leads to vascular dilation, manifesting in the form of varicose veins and spider veins.
While varicose veins and spider veins are the most visible signs of vein disease, they’re not the only — or even the first — symptoms. Most of the symptoms of vein disease start manifesting long before you notice the varicose veins on your skin’s surface. You should ideally consult vein doctors when you notice the first signs and symptoms — leg heaviness, restless leg syndrome, leg pains, leg swelling, frequent leg cramps, and skin discoloration. The symptoms of vein disease worsen at the end of the day or after long periods of sitting or standing still.

What happens if I don’t seek varicose vein treatments?
Venous insufficiency is a chronic condition that worsens with time. If you don’t remove the varicose veins promptly, the continued blood accumulation will over-extend the vein walls, eventually causing a rupture that leads to profuse bleeding. Other complications of untreated vein disease include skin discoloration, skin disease, leg ulcers, and deep vein thrombosis. You should ideally treat vein disease long before these complications occur.
What are the best treatments for spider veins and varicose veins?
The best treatments for spider veins and varicose veins are minimally invasive procedures that cause no pain or discomfort and conclude within an hour. Your vein doctor may recommend numerous minimally invasive vein treatments — but the ideal treatment for you depends on your unique concerns, goals, medical history, and other factors.
The following is an overview of the best treatments for spider veins and varicose veins:
- Radiofrequency Ablation: Thermal energy is delivered into the diseased saphenous vein via a catheter inserted through an incision on the skin’s surface. The diseased vein closes, and the accumulated blood freely reroutes to healthier veins.
- Endovenous Laser Ablation: Laser energy is delivered into the affected saphenous vein via an endovenous laser inserted through an incision on the skin’s surface. The problematic vein closes, and the accumulated blood freely reroutes to healthier veins.
- VenaSeal: A medical-grade adhesive is injected into the diseased saphenous vein to fuse its walls, turning it into a hardened tissue that gets absorbed by the body. The accumulated blood reroutes to healthier veins.
- Ambulatory Phlebectomy: The superficial varicose veins on the skin’s surface are extracted through small incisions on the skin’s surface.
- Sclerotherapy: A special medication called a sclerosant is injected into the spider veins to turn them into hardened scar tissues eventually absorbed by the body.

Are varicose vein treatments covered by medical insurances?
Varicose vein treatments are covered by medical insurances if you have underlying vein disease. Insurance plans pay to make you feel better, not look better. As such, radiofrequency ablation and endovenous laser ablation are almost always eligible for insurance coverage because they treat the underlying vein disease. VenaSeal isn’t always eligible for insurance coverage because it’s a relatively new procedure — not yet covered by all insurance plans. Ambulatory phlebectomy and sclerotherapy aren’t typically covered by insurance plans because they’re cosmetic procedures. However, in some cases, sclerotherapy may receive insurance coverage if you have underlying venous insufficiency. Please discuss your insurance coverage options with your vein doctor.
