What are the best minimally invasive varicose vein treatments?
1. Radiofrequency Ablation
Radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive procedure for underlying vein disease. The vein doctor administers local anesthesia and makes a small incision on the skin’s surface. The incision is an entry point for an ultrasound-guided catheter driven into the diseased saphenous vein. Once inside, the catheter delivers thermal energy to close the diseased vein, rerouting the accumulated blood to healthier veins.
2. Endovenous Laser Ablation
Endovenous laser ablation is a minimally invasive procedure for underlying vein disease. The vein doctor administers local anesthesia and makes a small incision on the skin’s surface. The incision is an entry point for an ultrasound-guided laser fiber driven into the diseased saphenous vein. Once inside, the laser fiber delivers laser energy to close the diseased vein, rerouting the accumulated blood to healthier veins.
3. VenaSeal
VenaSeal is a minimally invasive treatment for underlying venous insufficiency. The vein doctor injects a medical-grade adhesive into the diseased vein using ultrasound guidance. The vein glue fuses the diseased vein’s walls to shut it down and reroute the accumulated blood to healthier leg veins, restoring effective blood circulation to the heart.
4. Ambulatory Phlebectomy
Ambulatory phlebectomy is a minimally invasive procedure for superficial varicose veins. The vein doctor makes small incisions on the skin’s surface to extract the small varicose veins. The incision marks gradually heal and fade away. This procedure only removes the visibly bulging veins without addressing the underlying vein disease.
5. Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive spider vein treatment. The vein doctor injects a special sclerosing solution into the spider veins to fuse their walls, turning them into hardened scar tissues that eventually get absorbed by the body and fade away. This is a cosmetic treatment that only removes the visible spider veins without addressing the underlying vein disease.

What can I expect from my vein treatment appointment?
Step 1: Diagnosis
Your varicose vein treatment appointment starts with an initial consultation with the vein doctor. The doctor examines your leg veins to look for the signs and symptoms of vein disease. They also review your medical history, discuss your symptoms, and run advanced vascular imaging tests. The ultrasound test visualizes the blood flow in your leg veins, revealing if you have underlying vein disease. The vein doctor uses that information to discuss your vein treatment options and curate the ideal personalized vein treatment plan.
Step 2: Treatment
If you have underlying vein disease, the vein doctor will recommend radiofrequency ablation, endovenous laser ablation, or VenaSeal. As explained earlier, these treatments close the diseased saphenous vein using various techniques to reroute the accumulated blood to healthier leg veins. If you don’t have underlying vein disease (or after the primary vein treatment), the vein doctor recommends ambulatory phlebectomy or sclerotherapy to remove the spider veins and superficial bulging veins.
Step 3: Recovery
The entire varicose vein treatment process concludes within 30 minutes to 60 minutes, depending on the number of spider veins and varicose veins. You can resume your daily activities as soon as you leave the medical clinic. However, you’ll have to follow some post-treatment recovery guidelines, like wearing compression stockings for a few weeks, avoiding heavy workouts and heavy lifting, and walking frequently. In some cases, you may have to return for some follow-up treatments.
