Now, you might be wondering what’s the best vein treatment out there, but that’s a complicated question. The ideal vein treatment for your specific needs depends on various factors, such as whether you have underlying venous disease, your cosmetic goals, your insurance coverage options, and other factors. VTC Long Island only provides minimally invasive vein treatments, such as radiofrequency ablation, endovenous laser ablation, VenaSeal, sclerotherapy, and ambulatory phlebectomy. We choose the ideal procedure based on a thorough analysis of your underlying venous disease.
Please continue reading to learn about the factors that determine the ideal vein treatment for you.
Factor #1. Do you have an underlying venous disease?
Venous disease, also known as chronic venous insufficiency, is a circulatory disorder wherein your vein valves collapse and blood accumulates in your leg veins. In healthier veins, the valves act as one-way doors to ensure one-way blood flow to the heart. When your vein valves collapse, the blood flows backward due to gravity, accumulating in your leg veins. Venous disease is responsible for most of your vein problems. As blood continues accumulating in the leg veins, it leads to spider veins, varicose veins, restless leg syndrome, and other problems.
Most medical spas and vein centers treat the superficially visible symptoms, such as spider veins, without investigating the root cause of your problems. However, that’s like painting over a mossy wall instead of fixing the pipes underneath. It’s short-term and bound to cause future complications. Our board-certified vascular surgeons carefully investigate the root cause of your vein problems. They administer advanced vascular imaging tests, such as duplex ultrasound, to visualize the blood flow in your leg veins, identifying the venous disease. We recommend vein treatments based on your diagnosis.
If you have underlying venous disease, the ideal minimally invasive vein treatments include radiofrequency ablation, endovenous laser ablation, and VenaSeal. These procedures collapse the diseased saphenous vein responsible for your vein problems, restoring smooth blood circulation to the heart. If you don’t have underlying venous disease, the ideal minimally invasive vein treatments include ambulatory phlebectomy and sclerotherapy. These procedures remove the visible or superficial varicose veins and spider veins without addressing the underlying problem. Most vein treatment plans combine both types of procedures to address venous disease and superficial symptoms.
Factor #2. Do you want to get rid of the visible spider veins and varicose veins?
Without underlying venous disease, the visible spider veins and varicose veins on the surface of your skin are essentially harmless. Sure, they might cause some discomfort, and their presence may cause self-consciousness and affect your mental health, but they’re not physically dangerous (not without underlying venous disease). Furthermore, the primary vein treatments treat venous disease but don’t necessarily remove the superficial spider veins and varicose veins. As such, the specific vein treatment plan depends on your cosmetic goals.
If you decide to improve your cosmetic appearance, our board-certified vascular surgeons will use sclerotherapy and ambulatory phlebectomy to remove the visible spider veins and varicose veins. If not, your vein treatment will end after we address the underlying venous disease. However, this isn’t a major factor because most patients opt to remove the superficial spider veins and varicose veins after the treatment — what’s the point of addressing the underlying venous disease if you can’t feel better about your legs’ appearance?

Factor #3. How important is insurance coverage to you?
Generally speaking, insurance coverage is available for vein treatments deemed medically necessary, i.e., vein treatments that address the underlying venous disease. Radiofrequency ablation and endovenous laser ablation are covered by most insurance plans because they’re medically necessary vein treatments. VenaSeal also addressed the underlying venous disease, but it’s not yet covered by all insurance plans because it has only recently received FDA approval, making it a fairly new treatment. However, VenaSeal treatment only involves an injection, whereas the ablative methods include a small incision — they’re all painless, but the method differs.
You should also note that cosmetic procedures, like ambulatory phlebectomy and sclerotherapy, aren’t eligible for insurance coverage. However, our state-of-the-art vein center often includes sclerotherapy in the primary vein treatment, thereby extending coverage to it, but only if you have underlying venous disease. You may discuss that option with your vascular surgeon. Your choice of vein treatment will depend on how much insurance coverage matters to you and the specific details of your insurance plans. Our vein doctors will review your insurance coverage details to recommend the ideal vein treatments for you — we aim to reduce your out-of-pocket costs as much as possible.
